ICMP (Internet Control Message Protocol) is an error-reporting protocol network devices like routers use to generate error messages to the source IP address when network problems prevent delivery of IP packets.


ICMP has no ports and is neither TCP nor UDP. ICMP is IP protocol


The Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is a network layer protocol used by network devices to diagnose network communication issues. ICMP is mainly used to determine whether or not data is reaching its intended destination in a timely manner.


Internet Control Message Protocol (ICMP) is one of the protocols of the TCP/IP suite. The ICMP echo request and the ICMP echo reply messages are commonly known as ping messages. ... The ping command sends an ICMP echo request to a device on the network, and the device immediately responds with an ICMP echo reply.


ICMP disabled, the host will not be aware of the most optimal route to the destination — causing the host to send data through excessive network devices, consuming unnecessary resources which leads to the reduction of network performance.
